AMD, or Advanced Micro Devices, is a multinational semiconductor company that was founded in 1969. It was initially focused on producing microprocessors, but over the years has expanded its product line to include graphics cards, motherboard chipsets, and other computer components.
Introduction
AMD was founded in 1969 by Jerry Sanders, who served as the company’s CEO until 2002. He was also the first person to ever hold that position at AMD. He joined the firm after graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in electrical engineering, where he worked on military communications systems for NASA during his time there.
AMD’s other co-founder was Stan Mazor, who was also an electrical engineer by trade and had previously worked at Fairchild Semiconductor before joining forces with Sanders. After leaving AMD following its acquisition by AT&T (yes, that AT&T), he went on to found Cypress Semiconductor Corp., which went public in 1986 and has since become one of Silicon Valley’s most successful chipmakers–and one of its biggest acquisitors as well!

In 1993 AMD released their first 64-bit processor called K5; this was followed by K6 in 1996 which included an integrated floating point unit (FPU). These two products paved way for future generations of processors such as Athlon and Duron
