Founders
The company was founded in 1978 by John Mackey and Bob Gettner, who were both co-owners of Safer Way Natural Foods, a small natural foods store in Austin, Texas. In 1980 Bill Gettner joined the company as its third partner.
The first store opened in Austin on December 4th 1980 with an initial investment of $4500 from each of the three partners (the name AMX came from their initials). The store initially sold only natural and organic foods; it did not carry any products containing artificial ingredients or preservatives until 1984 when they added some items that contained refined sugar due to customer demand.
