History of Seiko

Seiko was founded in 1881 by Kintaro Hattori, who had previously worked for his father’s watch and jewelry shop. The company’s first product was an alarm clock, which it sold under the name Seikosha (meaning “House of Exquisite Workmanship”).
In 1895, Seiko began producing clocks that were used on Japanese naval vessels; these clocks were so accurate that they could be used as navigation instruments. In 1904, the company introduced its first wristwatch–the Pulsation Watch–which featured a spring-driven movement made entirely by hand with no machine parts at all!
In 1913, Seiko released another revolutionary timepiece: a pocket watch called “Grandfather Clock” with an accuracy rating of +/- 1 second per day (a feat unheard-of at the time). It also featured an alarm function that could be set using two hands on either side of its face instead of moving forward or backward like most other alarms did at this point in history…and it even came packaged inside its own wooden box!
