History of SUSE

SUSE is a German company that was founded in 1992. The name SUSE stands for Software und System Entwicklung (Software and System Development).
The first version of SUSE Linux was released in 1994 and since then, it has become one of the most popular distributions of Linux.
In 2004 Novell acquired SUSE and became its owner until 2014 when it was sold to Micro Focus International PLC.

It was founded in 1992 by Ralf Flaxa and Roland Dyroff, who wanted to create an alternative to proprietary Unix operating systems like Sun Microsystems’ Solaris. The company’s first product was SUSE Linux 1.0, which launched in 1994.
In 2001, Novell acquired SUSE for $210 million; it then went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange later that year under the ticker symbol “SUSE.” In 2011, Attachmate acquired Novell for $2 billion–and along with it came SUSE! In 2014 Attachmate sold its entire portfolio of software businesses including SUSE (now owned by Micro Focus International) for $2 billion USD cash plus additional contingent payments based upon performance targets achieved over three years following closing date (December 31st 2022).
