The company’s name comes from combining “maximum” and “cell”. The first product it produced was the first magnetic tape cartridge for use with reel-to-reel audio recorders; this was followed by batteries for electronic devices such as calculators or watches. In 1973 Maxell introduced its first line of compact cassettes which were used by several companies including Sony (for their Walkman) until they started producing their own branded cassettes in 1979.[2]
