History of Getac

Getac is a leading manufacturer of ruggedized mobile computing devices. It was founded in 1995, with the goal of developing products that could withstand the harsh environments found in manufacturing plants and warehouses. The company’s first product was a laptop computer designed for use in harsh environments; it was introduced at COMDEX 1996 and won several awards at trade shows around the world.
The early years were marked by steady growth as Getac expanded its product line to include more ruggedized PCs and notebooks, as well as tablets and smartphones. In 2002 they acquired Xplore Technologies Inc., which had been making rugged handheld computers since 1992; this acquisition gave Getac access to Xplore’s patented technology for touchscreens on handheld computers (which has since been used in many consumer electronics devices).
Getac continued to grow through acquisitions over the next decade: In 2005 they purchased Accu-Data Systems Inc., makers of barcode scanners; two years later they acquired Mobile Computing Solutions Inc., which made ruggedized mobile phones; then in 2010 they bought out Vantage Point Technologies Inc., another manufacturer specializing in ruggedized portable computers
