Introduction

Quark Software is a company that develops software for print and digital media.
The company was founded in 1981 by Bill Gates, Paul Allen, and Bob O’Rear (who also invented the mouse). The name “Quark” comes from a physics term describing subatomic particles that make up atoms. In 1991 they released their first product: QuarkXPress 3.0 which revolutionized desktop publishing by making it possible for anyone with a computer to create professional-looking documents without having any design skills or training.
In 1996 they acquired Ventura Publisher from Microsoft which added desktop publishing capabilities for web pages as well as print ads; this product was later renamed Quark Publishing System (QPS).
